On the way, Burgess called Kyle. Got the usual “Kyle, Investigations,” even though Kyle knew who was calling.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“Not a hell of a lot unless you count Cote sniffing around, trying to see if we’re hiding anything.”

“Haven’t got anything to hide yet. I suppose you can’t tell him that.”

“Nope. So, I sent Stan to the hospital to relieve Sage Prentiss. Looks like Aaron Daggett is waking up, so maybe we’ll get something from him. I’ve tracked down the two men Deidre Lovejoy told you were Dr. Spence’s friends, Jeff Gilbert and Coleman Travis. You and I have an appointment to speak with one of them, Jeff Gilbert, at two today. One of the neighbors I left a card for called and said we can come by and talk around five, though he said he really doesn’t have anything to tell us.”

“They never know what they know until we fix our hard, cold eyes upon them,” Burgess said.

“Sounds like something I would say.”

“True. So that’s it?”

“It’s something, Joe. How was the autopsy? Learn anything about the cause of death?”

“Oh, yeah. It’s a strange one indeed. Seems Dr. Spence died from something called myocardial contusion. In layman’s terms, a bruised heart from a blow to the chest sufficiently strong to cause the heart to rupture. Dr. Lee says these events usually result from car accidents, sports injuries, or falls. Beyond that? He says it’s probable the subject was likely lying down and wondered how that might have happened. Whether Dr. Spence was drugged. We’ll have to wait for toxicology to see whether that’s the case.”

“Someone with medical knowledge?”

“Lee says maybe, but that there are a lot of people around who, for various reasons, need to know how to recognize a possible myocardial contusion.”

Kyle made a humming sound, as he sometimes did when he was processing things, then said, “That’s a lot of news. Anything else?”

“Lee speculates Dr. Spence had a lot of sex before he died. And that the insertion of that bottle occurred around the time of death.”

“So definitely a message?”

“He thinks so.”

“Spence must have really pissed someone off,” Kyle said. “Now, all we have to do is find that person.”

“Although we’ve been told, or at least Stan has, that he was an exemplary doctor, and everyone thought very highly of him.”

“By two of his colleagues. Two out of three ain’t much,” Kyle reminded him. “Though that third was pretty evasive. But he was sued by his late wife’s siblings. They obviously didn’t think so highly of him.”

“You want to follow that up?”

“The siblings? Instead of poring over his financials, I’d love to. Admit to being better with people than numbers.”

“Then have at it. The numbers things, you know, it’s because numbers don’t flinch when you fix your eyes on them.”

“Nope,” Kyle said. “With numbers, I do the flinching. Not that I’m bad at it. I just don’t like it as much as scaring someone into coughing up the truth.”

“What’s Stan up to?” Burgess asked, then remembered. “So, Stan’s at the hospital.
